St Raphael's Edible Garden Opening Ceremony
August 07, 2019
St Raphael’s Edible Garden was officially opened to the public on Saturday 3rd August by the Mayor of Brent (Cllr Ezeajughi) and the Leader of Brent Council (Cllr Muhammed Butt). Along with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, awards were presented to many of the amazing volunteers and generous corporate sponsors who have supported Sufra NW London in developing the Community Garden since its inception.
John Sisk & Son, Islamic Relief, Quintain Ltd, Carey’s Group, Daniels Estate Agents and the David Cock Foundation were among those presented with an award. Over 120 people attended and participated in a range of activities including roasting apples during a Forest School Session, a beekeeping taster session, table tennis and face painting.
The Community Garden emerged from a local campaign by residents to develop a food growing project for the community. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, St. Raphael’s Edible Garden now has a teaching tipi, a chicken coup, a wildlife pond, a fruit tree orchard, compost bins, plenty of raised beds and a stunning pergola.
Although the garden is managed and run by Sufra NW London, it is here to benefit the community. The garden provides a therapeutic space from where we can invest in the skills, health and wellbeing of local people, whilst improving the appearance of the estate and giving residents an opportunity to come together, have fun and grow food.
Apart from producing a wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs that can be distributed at our Food Bank or used to prepare food for our Community Kitchen, we have a wide range of services and activities available for anyone who wants to get involved.
