Food Justice for Brent: Sign the Petition

Get Up, Stand Up…
Stand Up for Your Rights!
Of all the Human Rights that governments across the world have pledged to uphold (some of them were agreed more than 70 years ago), the Right to Food is arguably the most fundamental.
We know first-hand at Sufra that access to nutritious food is critical for our health and wellbeing. But food is also the glue that binds families and communities together.
“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.” - Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 25
Sufra NW London is committed to campaigning for changes that can make a lasting difference to those we support. We’ve been working with partners to launch a Food Justice campaign to get the Right to Food firmly on Brent Council’s agenda.
At the launch event on 10th July, Sufra’s Fahim Dahya and others spoke about the urgent need to move beyond food aid. You can read an article in the Brent and Kilburn Times about it here.
A successful campaign can pave the way for a Food Justice Strategy that can bring local food organisations together to ensure that EVERYONE in Brent can access affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food, every day of the year.
"Recognising the Right to Food in Brent is a crucial first step towards ending dependence on food banks and establishing more effective ways to ensure that all families can access healthy, nutritious food." – Rajesh Makwana, Director, Sufra NW London
Upholding the Right to Food would be a dream come true for thousands of families struggling to make ends meet. A similar campaign has already been successful in Liverpool.
With your help, we can make it happen in Brent too.
Please sign the petition here and share it in your networks.
“The right to adequate food is realized when every man, woman and child, alone or in community with others, has physical and economic access at all times to adequate food or means for its procurement.” – General Comment 12 (Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, CESCR, 1999).
