Meet Nancy, the Upcycling Queen of the Community Wellbeing Service
September 15, 2026

Nancy is a humanitarian worker with a background in performance and visual arts. Before joining Sufra, she worked in Poland as a facilitator and co-ordinator of Child Friendly Spaces in reception centres on the Polish-Ukrainian border. In Moldova, she was part of an international team that set up and ran a community centre in Bălți, creating a space where Ukrainian refugees and local residents could meet.

Nancy joined Sufra in August 2025 and quickly became an essential volunteer and facilitator at the CWS. With her imagination and an eye for what others might throw away, Nancy has found countless ways to turn packaging from our food items into art materials. A small cardboard box might become a boat, while a toilet roll can be transformed into a little animal with googly eyes. Her workshops encourage children to see potential in everyday objects and to have fun creating.

Nancy’s workshops are very popular. During term time, our members enjoy them as an opportunity to relax and practise their (very impressive!) drawing skills. Members have also been making decorations to celebrate festivities such as Lunar New Year, Eid and Diwali.
Since Arts and Crafts started at the CWS, the space looks completely different. Nancy takes special care to make sure that the art created by members is valued and beautifully displayed in the café hall.

During the school holidays, Nancy’s table is surrounded by children ready to make something: salt dough shapes, decorated pasta boats, paper fans, animal head crowns… there’s always something fun to get stuck into!

Nancy’s involvement with Sufra goes beyond her creative workshops. She is also involved in our community-led steering groups, helping to ensure that the voices and experiences of our members are reflected in how we develop our programmes. The steering groups bring together community members, guests, volunteers and partners, creating spaces where people can share their experiences, influence decisions and help shape our services. Through her involvement, Nancy brings her creativity and experience to help make Sufra a place where people have the opportunity to shape the services and communities around them.
