How to Vote in the General Election

What is a general election?

At a general election you have one vote to choose a candidate to represent your constituency in the House of Commons. The leader of the party with the most MPs becomes the Prime Minister and forms a government that will run the country.

Voting is an important way hold our leaders to account for the issues that matter to you.

Who can vote?

To vote in a general election you must:

  • be registered to vote
  • be 18 or over on the day of the election (‘polling day’)
  • be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
  • be resident at an address in the UK or living abroad and registered as an overseas voter
  • not be legally excluded from voting

How to Register

In order to vote, you need to register to vote by 11:59pm on 18 June 2024. It takes around 5 minutes, and you will need to submit your National Insurance number into the form.

If you are unsure if you’re already registered to vote, you can call your Electoral Services to find out.

How to Vote?

Once you are registered, you will receive your poll card in the mail before the election. The poll card states your local polling station where you will be able to vote on 4 July. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm. The polling station nearest to Sufra is the Family Wellbeing Centre.

You need to show photo ID when voting in person in some elections and referendums in England, Scotland and Wales.

Check what types of ID you can use before you go to vote here (you can still use your ID even if it has expired).

If you don’t have any of the ID types listed, you can apply for a Voter ID certificate by June 26 here which can act as your ID on the day.

Voting Via Mail

If you are unable to make it on the day, you can also apply to vote by post, mailing in your vote.

The deadline to register for a postal vote is 5pm on 19 June 2024.

Please note that, for a postal vote, you’ll need to upload an image of your signature written with a pen on paper.
